Stephanie Lampkin

BBBY: What words best describe you?

STEPHANIE: Words that best describe me are: Sweet, Determined, Free-spirited, and Down-to-Earth

BBBY: Who is one of the most inspirational women in your life? And why?

STEPHANIE: The most inspirational woman in my life would be my Mother. Her resilience is amazing. She is THE most loving and giving person I know. Her touch is healing. Her words are soothing. She is the pure definition and Strength and Love. She survived stage 4 gastrointestinal cancer and the doctors said she would not pull through. She has been cancer free for almost 5 years!! God is good!

BBBY: What was the inspiration for starting your own business/staring in this business?

STEPHANIE: What inspired me to start my business was what my mother went through with her fight with cancer. Learning that a lot of the foods we consume and products we use on our bodies and hair, they all contain cancer causing ingredients. When we use lotions and body sprays, it takes 26 seconds for those chemicals to enter into our bloodstream. 26 seconds!!! If I can change that by creating my products, then I have done my part.

BBBY: What is the mission behind your/this business?

STEPHANIE: Our mission at Balmz and Bodi Company is to fulfill the bath, body, beauty, holistic health, and skincare needs of diverse individuals by creating natural and organic products.  Our goal is to provide a peaceful and comfortable environment to help our customers develop a spiritual and healthy well-being.

BBBY: What challenges did you face when starting your own business/in this business?

STEPHANIE: The most challenging thing about starting my business was finding the time. I didn’t feel I had enough time because I do work full time, I am a mother, a full time student, and I still need time to just BE…, but, I love to multitask and I love planning and organizing. Time management is a key factor for me. Also, this business is quite saturated meaning there are so many of us doing the same thing so I needed to find a way for my business to be different from others and to stand out.

BBBY: Do you have a life mission or inspirational quote that you live by?

STEPHANIE: Yes. “If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.” ~Audre Lorde

I love that quote because for so long I did so much of what others wanted me to do and then I realized that it was making me unhappy to the point to where it became unhealthy. Once I stopped trying to please others and focus on what Stephanie wanted for Stephanie, everything started falling into place for me.

BBBY: What inspires you to do what you do?

STEPHANIE: My inspiration to do what I do comes from a place of self-love. Self-love is regard for one's own well-being and happiness. So my products are all about self-love. Love for your skin, your hair, your body…whatever makes you who you are. We deserve to be our best selves and live it out loud. Self-love is not selfish. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy a little pampering?

BBBY: Tell us about a time in your life, where you felt most powerful as a woman.

STEPHANIE: A time in my life when I felt the most powerful was during a 40 day fast that I participated in. This was powerful for me because just by sacrificing things that I thought I really needed or wanted, it was then that I realized Our Creator had already blessed me with what I needed and everything I wanted came to me even greater. To focus on my relationship with God was amazing. Another thing that makes me feel powerful as a woman is Motherhood. It’s the most amazing, messiest, terrifying, disgusting, and most beautiful thing I could ever be a part of. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

BBBY: What has made you most proud and why?

STEPHANIE: What has made me the most proud of myself is the fact that I have proven a lot of people wrong and I am able to stand in my own truth, I know exactly who I am and what it is that I want and do not want. I know what and who to give my energy and time to and how to keep moving forward. There was a time in my life when I didn’t know. I didn’t speak up for myself, I did what I thought those around me would be satisfied with. So to overcome that and be able to stand on my own, is great.

BBBY: What is the most important lesson you have learned as an entrepreneur or as you started in this business?

STEPHANIE: My most important lesson was to not procrastinate. Do not wait. The time is now. If you want something, go and get it because it is not going to just come to you. I learned in my first year because I missed a few opportunities that I thought would come back around and they didn’t. So, now, I search for those opportunities instead of waiting for them.

BBBY: What are 3 tips you can share with aspiring entrepreneurs or someone ready to go after their dreams?

STEPHANIE: 1. Pray, have Faith, and put in the work. 2. Never let anyone tell you what you cannot do. Let your vision and your passion guide you. 3. Do not give up. There will be hard times, but stick with it. You’ll be so proud of yourself even more so for NOT giving up.

BBBY: Fill in the blank: I feel most empowered when I___________________

STEPHANIE: I feel most empowered when I am well rested, when the people I love are healthy and happy. When I accomplish a goal, and when I am doing something that I want to do for myself that doesn’t involve anyone else.
